What is a civil war, and what do we need to know about civil wars? During an authors' workshop held at the American Academy on November 2-4, 2016, participants answered these questions. Participants at the workshop included scholars, military and government officials, media personnel, and representatives from nongovernmental organizations. The first volume, published in Fall 2017, focused on empirical evidence, explanatory frameworks, and identifying the threats that emanate from civil wars and weak states.
