Vessels can get stuck in the ice. They can have a difficult time getting to and from the pier. These vessels, the tugs and barges, they're carrying extremely important goods, like heating oil, the salt for the roadways. And right now, with the freezing temperatures, demand for those goods is up and at an all-time high. So it's very important that they make it in and out of their berths and transfer their goods in.” 6. Various of vessels at a port filled with sheets of ice 7. Crew on another ship waving 8. NYC Ferry boats 9. SOUNDBITE (English) Sydney Neimi, Senior Chief, Coast Guard Cutter Hawser: "Coast Guard Cutter Hawser is an ice breaking cutter. This is the exact mission we're designed for, and we get really excited every time this season comes around. The ship is designed to ride up on top of the ice and crush it underneath the weight of the hull. And then we are designed with a very large wake. So as we're moving through the ice, our wake will break it up even more into smaller pieces. The ship has a football shape on the bottom. The stern is rounded, and that allows us to back and turn in the ice. And then we're also one of the smallest icebreakers. So we are able to get into these smaller terminals and ports. Our shallower draft lets us get into shallow waters and break up the ice next to the piers for these boats.” 10. Mid of Manhattan 11. Statue of Liberty 12. Wide of Manhattan 13. SOUNDBITE (English) Sydney Neimi, Senior Chief, Coast Guard Cutter Hawser: “(The) ice is very unpredictable. It moves around a lot. This is actually the worst conditions we've been seeing. Sometimes when the weather warms up, it actually breaks off more ice from the shoreline, and then it can accumulate in places like New York Harbor. Yesterday we saw a choked up point in Manhattan that we broke up, and we've seen a lot of ice accumulating alongside the piers, so the vessels are having a difficult time getting in and out of their pier spaces." 14. SOUNDBITE (English) Sydney Neimi, Senior Chief, Coast Guard Cutter Hawser: “It's very loud on an icebreaker. Everything, the whole ship will shake and it's really noisy on board the ship, but we absolutely love our jobs and we love being out here working. We're especially happy to be back here in New York Harbor, which is our home port and our home base. So when everyone else, it disrupts everyone else's activity, this is actually kind of like our Super Bowl out here." 19. Bitter cold continued in New York for weeks after a massive winter storm hit the US, dumping sleet, freezing rain and snow across the South and up through New England. Sheets of ice covered large sections of the river, forcing some New York ferries to suspend operations since late January. Partial service for routes on the NYC Ferry resumed Wednesday.
