On March 8th, 2026, an Iranian strike hit the Bazan refinery in Haifa Bay, a critical site that provides nearly 60% of Israel’s fuel. With the backup facility only producing 110,000 barrels daily, the energy crisis is deepening. Simultaneously, the Strait of Hormuz has been shut down for Western ships. Out of the 20 million barrels that usually pass through this chokepoint every day, only 4.2 million can be diverted to other pipelines. This leaves 15.8 million barrels of oil with no way to reach the global market. As a result, oil prices have surged from $70 to $107. Major energy players like Qatar have declared force majeure on gas contracts, while Kuwait has stopped exports entirely. Although the U.S. and its partners have neutralized 90% of Iran’s missile stockpile, the attacks are becoming more precise and frequent. This is because Iran’s "horizontal mosaic defense" was built to stay operational even after its leadership is targeted, and Russia is now assisting with targeting intelligence. Ultimately, this conflict isn't about the number of weapons. It is a race to see who runs out of defensive interceptors first while 15.8 million barrels of oil remain stuck.
