Blog and website: www.skillcult.com/blog Instagram and Facebook @SkillCult After pollinating the apple seedlings to make the crosses I wanted two springs ago, I allowed the pollinated blossoms to grow and make apples. The apples were harvested, the seeds removed and, put into cold storage for a couple of months to stratify, which breaks the seed’s dormant phase allowing it to sprout. The seeds were planted into flats until a few inches tall and then planted in a garden bed to grow for the summer. Each seedling is tagged with a code which identifies that plant. If it turns out to be good enough, it will be given a real name. Next the seedlings are cut off and grafted onto dwarfing rootstocks to be planted out in permanent trial rows where they will grow until they are either deemed worthy of keeping either for use and propagation, or as breeding stock, or they will be discarded and cut down if unworthy. The apples will probably start bearing in around 4 to 5 years from now.
