Improving Rigor & Reproducibility of Animal Research Using ARRIVE Presenter: Penny S Reynolds, PhD, Department of Anesthesiology, Statistics in Anesthesiology Research (STAR) Core, IACUC member, University of Florida Transparent and complete reporting is a cornerstone of reproducible research. However, animal research is often reported poorly, and investigators and organisations responsible for research integrity seem to be insufficiently aware of the consequences of poor reporting. The ARRIVE reporting guidelines, first released in 2010, are a checklist of the minimal essential information required to allow independent appraisal of research for reproducibility, relevance, and conformity with best scientific practice. Guideline items can also enable investigators to identify and incorporate best practice procedures into their research before experiments begin. This comprehensive set of recommendations enables investigators to adhere to standards identified by NIH for reproducible research. The revised version (ARRIVE 2.0) will be published in 2020. A major modification has been organization of checklist material into two tiers. The ‘Essential 10’ items are the minimum requirement for reproducibility; these include sample size justification, appropriate outcome measures, and bias minimisation methods, such as randomisation and blinding. The “Recommended” set are less directly related to reproducibility per se, but provide essential context for the specific research study (animal care and use, welfare, ethical oversight, internal validity, inferential scope, and verifiability). Dr. Penny Reynolds will lead us through a discussion of preclinical research reporting and applications of ARRIVE 2.0. Dr. Reynolds is a member of the International ARRIVE Guidelines Revision Working Group, a co-author of the upcoming ARRIVE 2.0 revised guidelines and companion Explanation and Elaboration document, and a member of the University of Florida IACUC.
