Then I test each coloring book over a large area of paper using a watercolor wash which is a very watered down watercolor paint spread over the paper and is commonly used for backgrounds of paintings. Once the watercolor paint is dry, I'm looking over each one to see how much the paper buckled and if the watercolor soaked through to the other side. If the buckling is bad or if the watercolor soaked through (or both) then I would say this is a no no for watercolor washes. For these coloring books that won't take a watercolor wash then I do further testing on smaller area's to see if the paper will take small amounts of less watery watercolor paint. If they do, then they are also fine to watercolor in so long as you don't use large washes.
