11-12-2010. A church friend and I kayaked Turkey Creek on Eglin Air Force Base. The water was crystal clear . . . unlike anything I've ever seen. Spectacular scenery. The weather was unseasonably warm . . . in the 70s. Life doesn't get any better than this . . . Even though the region has had a very dry summer, the current was swift. The creek is narrow (single file only), with hairpin turns one-after-the-other. A very challenging paddle. But worth it to see one of God's most beautiful works. The creek bottom is pure white sand. Depth ranges from 18 inches to three feet with occasional pools up to six feet . . . and you can see clearly to the bottom for the first 5 miles of the trip. We started at Hippie Hole and finished at the public boat ramp in Boggy Bayou. The paddle is a bit long . . . 9 miles. You may want to launch instead at the first bridge on the Eglin dirt road . . . BUT you will miss the most spectacular section, with the clearest water. Warnings: There are no sandbars to pull over and eat lunch at, unlike most rivers in the area. You are limited to the following spots . . . (1) the first bridge on the Eglin dirt road, (2) a very small sandbar on the left bank just after the culverts/tunnels, and (3) the boardwalks/swimming platforms at the Turkey Creek Nature Center near the end of the paddle. Additional warning: This paddle is NOT for the novice. The tight and frequent turns are challenging. And the current is swift in comparison to other creeks/rivers in the area. Paddles should be leashed to the kayaks, because they will float away VERY quickly if there is a mishap. . . . Oh . . . and expensive sunglasses should be left at home or secured well to your head. Rating of this creek: 10+ out of 10. Words cannot describe the beauty.
