Allegretto non troppo Mieczysław Surzyński (1866, Środa Wielkopolska - 1924, Warsaw) was an organist, composer, conductor, pedagogue, and the brother of both Józef and Stefan Surzyński. In the years 1885-1887, he studied the organ, piano, and composition at the conservatory in Berlin under Dienela, Bussler, and Radecki. From 1887 to 1890 he studied at the conservatory in Leipzig under Homeyer and Jadassohn. He was also formed at the church music school in Regensburg under Haller and Haberl. He worked as an organist, a choir director, and a pedagogue in Poznań, where he founded the music society and was a cathedral organist. He moved around from post to post before settling at the Warsaw Musical Institute where he taught organ, composition, and counterpoint. He performed organ concerts in Germany, Austria, and at the Warsaw Philharmonic. From 1906 to 1914, Surzyński worked with the Warsaw Philharmonic's choir to prepare for performances. From around 1908 he co-edited and published his articles and pieces in the publication "Church Singing (Śpiew Kościelny)," himself being a cathedral organist. From 1906, he was a lecturer at the Frederic Chopin Music School. In 1915, he went into exile in Saratov, returning to Warsaw in 1921 where he worked at the conservatory until the end of his life. During the time of his organ playing, he was considered without equal in Poland, winning several international competitions. He readily played from a wide selection of the romantic literature and popularized organ improvisation in Poland. As a teacher, he left his virtuosic imprint on his students among whom can be found Kazimierz Jurdziński, Bronisław Rutkowski, and Bolesław Szabelski.
