(14 Sep 1999) Natural Sound Students protesting against plans for an international peacekeeping force in East Timor have clashed with riot police outside a private university in Jakarta. The demonstrators set Indonesian army vehicles on fire and threw rocks at riot police who replied with tear gas. At first, riot police stood by as student protesters hurled rocks at them outside the Christian University in Jakarta on Tuesday. The students were protesting against any interference in East Timor by an international peacekeeping force. The crowd of students set fire to an army vehicle and watched it burn outside the private university, where some of the worst of Tuesday's demonstrations took place. The university is near Jakarta's regional military headquarters, where about one-thousand students and others protesters tried to march on parliament. They demanded the resignation of President B-J Habibie and that the Indonesian military end its involvement in politics. Students blame the military and Habibie for the violence that has resulted in thousands of deaths in East Timor. Habibie, who bent to huge international pressure to end the violence, agreed on Sunday to the deployment of a U-N-mandated peacekeeping force. Once inside the university, police began throwing rocks back at the students. One student replied with a Molatov cocktail. Riot police chased students through the streets and fired volleys of tear gas, overcoming some of the protesters. Two students were wounded by plastic bullets after the crowd damaged two police cars and set fire to an army vehicle. It has yet to be decided whether an international peacekeeping force will go to East Timor. Nationalist lawmakers and the Indonesian army have demanded the right to decide the composition of any force, while the military says it won't accept the participation of Australia. But President Habibie said there would be no conditions attached to the formation of an international peacekeeping force for East Timor. Violence, perpetuated by pro-Indonesia militias and Indonesian military backers, has ravaged the province since September 4th when 78.5 per cent of the electorate voted for independence from Indonesia.
