Dairy Cow Farming in Kenya and Beyond DAIRY COW FARMING Dairy cow farming is mainly practised for milk production, reproduction to provide replacement cows for the future, and, most importantly, providing a means of living for farmers in the dairy business by giving the most milk at the least possible cost. So naturally, a dairy cow will produce milk. However, the most suitable ones for commercial milk production are very few. Kenya's most important dairy cow breeds are Friesian, Ayrshire, Guernsey and Jersey breeds. The rest are either kept for beef or as dual-purpose animals. WHICH ARE THE COMMON DAIRY COW BREEDS IN KENYA FRIESIAN Originating from the Netherlands, they have distinctive black and white markings on their body. The average weight is 500-550kg. This dairy cow has the highest capacity to produce milk, with a low butterfat content of about 3.2%. This cow is a heavy feeder and susceptible to milk fever. Under good management can yield 40-60 litres of milk/per day. A healthy Friesian calf will weigh around 40 Kg or more at birth. AYRSHIRE This one originated from Scotland and is known to be an efficient grazer. Body colour is Brown and white patches in almost equal amounts, with Some cows tending to a dark mahogany colour. The breed is known for the superior shape and quality of her udder. The components of her milk make her suitable for producing butter and cheese. The average size will be between 450- 600kg. Ayrshire cattle will do better under pasture conditions than other major dairy breeds. They produce up to 30 litres/day with a butterfat content of about 4.0%. Relatively hardy and adaptable to varied climatic zones. They are relatively resistant to diseases. GUERNSEY At Explore TV, we exchange ideas to help one another grow in careers and life in general.
