After presenting Muhammad PBUH as a Prophet in a previous video, Dr. Shahrour proceeds to present the Prophet as a Messenger of God. He ascertains that the primary mission of the Messenger is to deliver the message, as to notify/announce, and thus, Muhammad PBUH was infallible as a messenger in delivering God’s message. But when the Prophet Muhammed uses his judgement in his prophethood as a leader/commander to build his state/community, then he is not infallible. In fact, when questioning his actions or judgements in the Divine Revelation, God always addressed him as a “Prophet” and never as a “Messenger!” Dr. Shahrour explains that God asked us in the Divine Revelation to always obey the Messenger. However, God required us to “completely and forever” obey the Messenger in the message and its rituals, but when it comes to his role as a figure of authority, He only required us to obey him “during his life”.
