Sri Ramachandra Institute of Higher Education and Research (SRIHER), recently inaugurated a Comprehensive Cleft Care Center of Excellence on the SRIHER campus marking 20 years of dedicated cleft care in partnership with Transforming CLEFT, a Canada-based organization committed to cleft care. The event was presided by Mr. VR Venkatachalam, Chancellor of SRIHER; Mr. Hugh Brewster, Executive Director of Transforming CLEFT, as Guest of Honour; and Dr. Saranya Jaikumar, educational psychologist and Tamil Nadu Children Welfare Committee member, as Chief Guest. Ms. Jackie Elton, Co-Founder of Transforming Cleft, also joined virtually from Canada. A diverse audience of devoted parents, treated cleft patients, from various districts of Tamil Nadu attended the event, alongside Vice Chancellor Prof. Uma Sekar, Prof. Tamizhchelvan, Dean of Dental Faculties, and dedicated cleft care providers. Three stalwarts were recognized for their groundbreaking contributions to cleft care in India: one in Cleft Orthodontics, one in Speech Pathology, and one from the Surgical Team. Among them was none other than Prof. Dr. S. M. Balaji, the visionary behind Balaji Dental and Craniofacial Hospital, Chennai, for his pioneering work in cleft rehabilitation. As the only surgeon honoured at the event, Prof. Balaji was lauded for his unwavering commitment to cleft rehabilitation, particularly for cleft children. With over three decades of surgical expertise, he has transformed countless lives, but it was the Chief Guest of the function Dr. Saranya Jaikumar's deeply personal testimony that truly captured the impact that he made in the life of people with cleft.
