UV light disinfection can be an effective treatment option for private surface water and groundwater supplies. Learn more about the benefits and limitations of UV light treatment for treating your drinking water at home or at the cottage. More About This Video: This is the third of four educational videos developed by the Mississippi-Rideau Source Protection Region to promote private drinking water treatment. A recent study of private drinking water supplies in the Upper and Middle Rideau Valley watershed found that approximately 1,000 residential properties around 7 major lakes draw water from their lake (called a private surface water system). About 1/3 of these properties reported they are drinking that surface water. The study recommended more public education for users of private surface water and groundwater systems, with a focus on the rising issue of harmful algae blooms on lakes and how to choose an appropriate private water treatment system for your property. This video explores the benefits of UV light disinfection in particular.
