LVMPD Cold Case Homicide detectives have identified Johnny Blake Peterson as the person who killed 22-year-old Diana Hanson in 1983. Hanson was reported missing on December 31, 1983 after she failed to return home. She was found deceased later that day on West Spring Mountain Road, approximately 1.5 miles west of South Buffalo Drive. The autopsy determined she had been sexually assaulted. During the investigation, detectives recovered suspect DNA from Hanson’s body. For the next 38 years, the LVMPD Homicide Section continued to work leads on the case, however detectives were unable to identify Hanson’s killer. Last month, with the help of Texas-based forensic sequencing laboratory Othram Inc., detectives identified Peterson as the person who kidnapped, raped and killed 16-year-old Kim Bryant in January 1979. After the discovery, detectives received information regarding Peterson’s possible involvement in Diana Hanson’s murder. As a result, detectives requested a direct comparison of DNA evidence recovered from Hanson’s body to that of Peterson. The comparison confirmed that Peterson was the suspect who murdered and sexually assaulted Hanson. Peterson died in January 1993, so no arrest will be made in this case. “This case is another example of the lengths detectives will go to in order to bring justice and closure to the families of murdered victims,” said Lt. Raymond Spencer in a video statement released Monday. He added, “The LVMPD Homicide Section will continue investigating all unsolved murders in an effort to identify the person’s responsible and hold them accountable.”
