Hey everyone, I'm Bernice, a new emergency medicine resident physician! I survived my first 28 hour trauma call shift - during the bloodiest summer in recent Chicago history - taking care of victims of gun shots, stabbings, battery, collisions and so much more. Here are a few of my reflections: 1) Being awake for 28 hours straight is unbelievable! Adrenaline kept me up bc of the nature of the work I was doing, but it definitely caught up with my body towards the end. 2) The life-saving procedures that I'm being trained to do are both terrifying and breath-taking. They don't always work and I still sweat profusely when its time to start them. But they another fighting chance to some of our patients who others would have considered a lost cause. 3) There is SO much suffering & death we bear witness to. Its tempting to be robotic in the face of it but I'm fighting that urge and processing the devastation that I'm seeing. I am a huge proponent of therapy and I'm starting the process of finding a therapist for residency as I need one now more than ever. 4) I'm grateful to be surrounded by amazing ppl while experiencing all this craziness. I love the team in working with. I have a strong support system between my co-residents, family and si many other loved ones who have been reaching out with love. I deeply appreciate each and every one of you. --- My Instagram!: / being.dr.bernice My Twitter!: / beingdrbernice Subscribe!: / @drberniceexplains --- Check out my other videos!: HOW TO GET INTO MEDICAL SCHOOL IN AMERICA: • GET INTO MEDICAL SCHOOL!
