(22 Mar 2020) Streets and squares in most major cities in southeastern Europe were almost completely deserted over the weekend as authorities across the region ordered people to stay in their homes in an attempt to curb the spread of the new coronavirus. Timelapse videos of tourist landmarks in Prague and Sarajevo showed just how few visitors were on the streets. All over the region, restaurants, bars, sports and entertainment venues were shut down last week and people were largely obeying government orders not to their homes other than to buy food and medicines, or go to work. After initial reluctance to accept the measure of avoiding unnecessary social contact, south Europeans withdrew to their homes amid the fear that the rising number of confirmed COVID-19 cases will overwhelm the capacity of their countries' medical systems to respond.
