As part of the Ultimate Gutter Guard Challenge series, we are bringing you a standalone video reviewing LeafFilter Gutter Protection. Having been installed on the north side of the garage for just over 3-years, LeafFilter had a tough time holding its own against the competition. We looked at 3 criteria as part of our gutter guards tests and reviews: 1. How well it shed leaves and debris off of the gutter cover 2. How much leaves and debris entered the gutter 3. How much water drained into the water buckets at the base of the downspouts While you might know LeafFilter from its TV commercials, print ads, and ubiquitous online ad presence, we know it as the original micro mesh gutter guard, invented by Alex Higginbotham in 1999. Three years is a long-time to test and review a gutter guard, and while it never won any of our weekly or annual gutter guard challenges, we kept it on the garage for 3-years because it is the most heavily hyped gutter guard known to man. Just because a product is heavily advertised, doesn't mean that it's any good. It just means that there's a company whose primary objective is to sell as much of it as possible. It may work well in some environments and poorly in other environments. From our perspective, LeafFilter has three meaningful shortcomings: 1) It's made from PVC (plastic) and it WILL expand, contract and warp over time. Again, your mileage may vary, but we have seen it warp badly, especially clay and grey colors. It isn't even available in brown or black, two popular gutter colors because PVC does not perform well when tinted to darker colors. 2) It sits too flat on top of the gutters, and it will accumulate debris on top of the gutter covers that may or may not blow off the covers, if you live in a treed or heavily wooded environment. 3) Each year that LeafFilter was installed, it did progressively worse during the annual water tests. In year 1, it was neck-and-neck with the winner, MasterShield. In year two, it performed worse than many other gutter covers. By the third year, it took in about 50% less water than it did the 1st year. What LeafFilter did well: LeafFilter did an excellent job keeping leaves and debris out of the gutters. As you'll see in the video, very little debris entered the gutters after 3-years of testing. Had we ranked it against the 22 gutter covers that we tested over the course of 3-years, LeafFilter would have ranked in the Top 3, easily beating many gutter guards that were designed in recent years to dethrone it. Things to keep in mind as you do your gutter guards research: LeafHome, the company behind the product, is first and foremost a marketing company. They didn't invent LeafFilter. Rather, they hitched their wagon to it nearly 2 decades ago, and they've done an effective job selling it as the exclusive dealer since 2010 or 2011. As a homeowner, you can take it or leave it. This video, as well as many others we have featured as part of the Ultimate Gutter Guard Challenge series on YouTube, illustrates how LeafFilter performs in the real world, absent the marketing hype. It may perform better or worse at your house, but this is a realistic view of how it performed in our test environment after 37-months. It's up to you to decide if LeafFilter is up to the task of protecting your gutters from leaves and debris. Enjoy the video!
