"Christian Walter (Head Of Firmware Development) - 9Elements Gmbh
As the demand for sustainable technology grows- the Open Compute Project (OCP) has been at the forefront of promoting hardware circularity as a core principle. This talk explores how open system firmware is pivotal in advancing these sustainability goals by extending the lifecycle of hardware. Traditional proprietary firmware often reaches end-of-life prematurely- leading to the underutilization of functional hardware and hindering the circular economy.
Open firmware solutions like coreboot and openBMC offer the transparency- adaptability- and ongoing support needed to keep hardware operational far beyond its initial service period. We will delve into the limitations of legacy firmware and how open firmware overcomes these challenges. Highlighting the OCP's Tioga Pass as a key case study- we will demonstrate how open firmware has enabled the continued use of these servers- supporting OCP's vision for a sustainable- circular hardware economy."
