Planet Doug is back, and this time we’re exploring Kuala Pilah, a charming historic town in Malaysia’s Negeri Sembilan state. After cycling 40 km from Seremban through brutal heat and holiday traffic, I decided to stay an extra day just to walk these streets. In this video, I take you on a relaxed walking tour through Kuala Pilah’s old town, filled with pre-World War II shophouses, colorful temples, and a surprising mix of Chinese, Indian, and Malay heritage. Along the way, I stumble into an incredible piece of local history—the Chinese Pleasure Garden and a memorial arch dedicated to the British Resident Martin Lister. But the real highlight? Meeting a local historian who led the restoration of the garden and arch and shared stories of his family’s rubber shop, a 100-year-old handmade noodle factory, and the last traditional rubber shop in town. I also check out a packed bicycle shop, cool off at Kopi Saigon with a mystery meal sent by a Planet Doug supporter, and wander down a jungle-like village lane by a hidden creek.
