Photographer: Walter Weible. Photographed at various times (winter and summer train schedule operations) 1967-9. 1. Cab ride between Shopton Yard (Fort Madison, Iowa) and Dearborn Station, Chicago aboard the Santa Fe Super Chief. 2. Railfanning at Pequot Tower and Joliet Station (Chicago area). Locomotive 400, a GE-U30CG was captured. 3. Railfanning in the ATSF Central Subdivision--includes Raton Pass, Model, Gallinas, and Raton. Notes: photographer was granted several cab rides aboard the Chief, the El Capitan, and possibly Grand Canyon or Chief passenger train. Observations: ATSF combined the El Capitan and Super Chief into one train in winter months, ran as separate trains in the Summer. The Budd-built high-level train set was exclusive to the El Cap train, the Super Chief is easily identified by the exclusively-used Pullman-built "Turquoise Room" short dome cars. The full dome cars were used on the Grand Canyon, Chief and Texas Chief train. ATSF never adopted mechanical air conditioning on the Super Chief--the cars used steam ejector air conditioning and the train required frequent water stops (despite being a diesel-hauled train) for the steam generators in the locomotives, as well as block ice for the diner. The steep grades through Raton Pass dictated that helper engines be added to the rear of heavier freight trains.
