The Birthday Box By Leslie Patricelli Ah, behold the boundless brilliance of… an empty box! This delightful picture book is essentially a tribute to preschoolers’ greatest philosophical revelation: that a cardboard box holds infinite possibilities and zero assembly required. After all, what could possibly outshine the excitement of unwrapping a brand-new birthday toy? Clearly, it’s discardingthat shiny gadget in favor of its cardboard chariot. Step inside and soar over vast oceans, commandeer a majestic sailing ship, race down wintry slopes with reckless abandon, and transform into a state-of-the-art (yet adorably squeaky) robot—all before snack time. Luckily, the loyal toy dog who arrived in said box remains content to ride shotgun on these epic escapades. With her signature wit and wise nod to parental reality, Leslie Patricelli’s first picture book adventure reminds us that life’s greatest joys come packaged… well, in the packaging. To Jason and Beck- my birthday boys. The Birthday Box Happy birthday to me! Leslie Patricelli Look! I got a present! Rip.Rip. What is it? It’s a box. A big brown box! I stand on my box. I am taller than a tree. I give my box a hug. Shhh. Where am I? Boo! Here I am! Look! There’s a hole. Is there something inside? It’s a doggy! I name him Oscar, and we get inside my box. We fly in an airplane over the ocean. We sail a ship. I am the captain. We slide through the snow. Look out below! We cut some holes in my box. Snip. Snip. Snip. I am a robot. “Robot hungry. Robot fetch snack,” I tell Oscar. We sit and eat. It’s my birthday, so we have cake. Oscar is tired. I’m tired, too. I get two pillows and a blanket, and I put them in my box. We get into bed for our nap and I tell Oscar a story. “I am very lucky,” the story goes. “Today is my birthday, and I got a box!” And there you have it, friends – who knew a humble cardboard box could hold the power of a pirate ship, a rocket, a robot suit, and a winter sled, all before lunchtime? Today’s story reminds us that true adventure doesn’t come with batteries or instructions – it comes from the endless wonders of our imagination. So, whether you’re big or little, young or grown, remember: the next time you see an empty box, don’t toss it out. Step inside and let your dreams take flight. Thank you for joining me today.
