Today was a nice day for a stroll along the Angerstein Wharf Branch in Charlton, South London. The Branch was constructed in 1852 & is about a mile long, it leads from the River Thames towards Charlton Railway Station, the main rail traffic these days is sea dredged aggregates for the construction industry. The spoil from Blackheath Railway Tunnel was used to build the embankment that the line stands on.We start the walk just south of the Tarmac works & are walking towards Charlton. We are walking along the newly installed yellow plastic walkway, at the bridge over the Woolwich Road I take a peep over, we then pass the whistle board for the foot crossing, we are now at the foot crossing built for farm workers ( it was originally in a tunnel under the railway ) it is now used by many people a day travelling from the local railway station, but is facing the axe from Network Rail for various reasons, we now follow the curve to a bridge which carries the Greenwich lines above us, after the bridge on the right hand side is the Police Pound for car storage, this site used to be the Railway Signalling Works, we now pass TL425 the exit signal for the Branch, the walk ends within sight of Angerstein Junction on the North Kent Lines, this has been a Freight Rambler Walk hope you enjoyed it !
