An Icon of Maya Archaeology in El Salvador: Tazumal

We will conclude our visit to Chalchuapa today with a visit to the Tazumal Maya ruins. This site is very close to Casa Blanca, which we visited in the previous video. The primary pyramid here was extensively rebuilt by the first archaeologist to work on it, Stanley Boggs. He used cement extensively to reconstruct the ruin for which he was extensively criticized. Nonetheless, the complexity of this structure is apparent as you'll see. Civilization has seriously encroached on the site and much of it has already been swallowed by the city of Chalchuapa. Thankfully, the site was saved by the Salvadoran government in 1947, and declared a National Historic Monument when the archaeological park was created. It is an important link to Maya heritage of the people of El Salvador.
