Marc-Andre Hamelin Honorable Mention: Bach's enormous Art of Fugue is quite possibly the most important work ever. Bach, being the master of fugues, left us with a gift of 14 fugues based on a simple theme but with contrapuntal metamorphosis so great that not a single composer has even come close to creating something similar. While the Art of Fugue is not quite popular already, some of the contrapunti are not seen enough despite their uniqueness. Especially, I chose the contrapunctus XII for this video; being one of the two mirror fugues in the set, it is somehow more catchy than the jagged contrapunctus II. 10. Busoni's solo piano transcription of Bach's Prelude and Fugue in Eb Major from Clavier-Übung III Here we immediately see the name Bach again, which will happen again later. This work is a transcription of a prelude and fugue from Bach's Clavier-Übung III, which translates to "keyboard practice." (FYI, Clavier-Übung IV is the Goldberg variations.) Busoni does a terrific job in transcribing the complex organ fugue to solo piano, which obviously results in rapid scales blended with chords in both hands. The transitions between the three fugue sections are simply divine. 9. Medtner's Sonata Minacciosa Medtner is one of the names overshadowed by other popular composers even though his work is like no other composers. Among his other sonatas, the Sonata Minacciosa is his most difficult, and the menacing fugue in the middle of the work is one of the reasons why. 8. Shostakovich's Prelude and Fugue No.15 in Db Major Shostakovich's Prelude And Fugue set contains spectacular works for piano, although he is not that recognized for his piano works. The fugue in the No.15 set is absolutely terrifying, featuring blazing speed, chaotic tempo changes, and rapid jumps in both hands. 7. Beethoven's Hammerklavier Sonata The revolutionary sonata that almost no one plays due to its complexity. The fugue in the 4th movement lasts around 10 minutes and contains complex and virtuosic contrapuntal writing never seen before. You might even be surprised that this piece is only ranked 7 on this list. 6. Godowsky's Passacaglia based on Schubert's Unfinished Symphony Godowsky is a name that only a few know despite his absolutely unique works. His passacaglia is one of the greatest sets of variations for piano, along with the fugue that just absolutely shreds. 5. Barber's Sonata The fugue in the 4th movement is complex, epic, beautiful, and extremely difficult to perform. It was bought to life by the recommendation of Horowitz, which should be enough explanation. 4. Reger's Variations and Fugue on a Theme of Bach's Cantata No.128 Reger is another name in the group of Bach enthusiasts, and he is probably the biggest one. While being about six feet tall and an absolute unit, he also composed works with a complexity so big that most of his contemporaries chose to neglect him. The fugue in this work is simply titanic. 3. Szymanowsky's Sonata No.2 Szymanowsky's second piano sonata is on the edge between romantic and modern styles. The fugue, as chromatic and dissonant it is, still contains the A-major majesty and dense contrapuntal writing written for nine hands. 2. Hamelin's Etude No.12 "Prelude and Fugue" Hamelin, being one of the greatest virtuosos alive, composed this work during his prime. The result is a prelude & fugue that basically nobody except him can play properly. 1. Feinberg's Piano Sonata No.3 Feinberg was a heavy Bach enthusiast; he has a full recording of Bach's WTC I and II and transcribed numerous Bach's works for solo piano. He was also a super-virtuoso. Composed during a period when he was the most technically profound and compositionally explorative, his Piano Sonata No.3 contains extremely personal and challenging passages. The fugue in the 3rd movement starts abruptly and evolves into a catastrophic transformation that absorbs everything.
