Walking an Abandoned Road in the Fog | A Burned House at the End

On March 4, 2026, I walked the full length of an abandoned rural road in Southern Ontario. The road, once maintained and travelled, is slowly disappearing as erosion and vegetation reclaim what once belonged to nature. A heavy fog lay over the landscape that morning, muting sound and softening the countryside into something quiet and mysterious. Walking along the forgotten road, it was easy to reflect on how quickly nature begins to take back what humans temporarily impose upon it. At the end of the road stood an old rural house that I had photographed years earlier because of its visual character and presence in the landscape. What I found instead was startling — the house had burned to the ground. The combination of thick fog, the silent road, and the charred remains of the house created an unexpectedly eerie ending to the walk. Sometimes exploration reveals more than we expect.
