Today, it’s often equated with being fair-skinned. Even in literature, women are described as having “rosy complexions” or “skin the color of blood when pinched.” While dark skin is seen as majestic for men, it’s still considered a flaw for women. The idea that fair skin equals beauty isn’t because it’s more attractive—it stems from a mindset of dominance. This obsession with fairness is most visible in modeling and cinema. But in this very industry, San Rachel stood tall, embracing her dark skin and proving it to be her strength. Born as Sankarapriya, 26-year-old San Rachel hailed from Karamanikuppam in Puducherry. Bright and academically gifted from a young age, she faced colour-based discrimination in many forms. Yet, she remained unfazed, focusing on her dream of becoming a doctor. She pursued MBBS at JIPMER Medical College. Her eloquence, striking eyes, and radiant dark skin caught the attention of her peers, who encouraged her to explore modeling. A fashion show at the ‘Spandan’ cultural fest sparked her passion further. Eventually, she left medicine behind and entered the modeling world under the name San Rachel. She went on to win titles like Miss Puducherry 2020, Miss Dark Queen Tamil Nadu 2019, and Queen of Madras 2022. In 2023, she participated in the Miss Africa Golden India pageant and secured second place in the Black Beauty category. Her words—“How can skin colour define a person’s soul? We must change that mindset”—shook the modeling world. In an interview, she boldly said, “Don’t call me dusky. Call me dark. I’m proud of it.” Despite her strength, Rachel faced immense pressure due to debts incurred for wedding expenses and fashion training. On July 13, she tragically passed away at JIPMER after a suicide attempt. She had aspired to win titles like Miss World and Miss India. Though she’s no longer with us, Rachel shattered the myth that dark-skinned women can’t succeed in modeling. She carved a path for future generations. Her Stories offers heartfelt condolences to this regal woman who raised her voice against colourism.
