Is guitar or ukulele better for kids to start with? Well, it depends! In this video, we will look at 5 factors that can help you decide what would be a better first instrument for your child to learn. I will also introduce a third option called a Loog guitar, which will be a good fit for some kids. Below, I'll include names and links to what I think are the best starter instruments for both guitar and ukulele. I'll also include the Loog guitar and the books I mentioned in the video. Is your child interested in guitar or ukulele? I offer both 1-1 and group classes that are perfect for kids who want to learn in a way that's fun, creative, and engaging! You can contact me anytime to learn more about my classes, or just ask me anything about guitar! The Makala Dolphin is the smaller, colorful ukulele you saw in the video. As of today, they are around $50. This is a wonderful option, especially if your child loves color. Makala Dolphin (Green): https://amzn.to/3kyYHpi Makala Dolphin (Purple): https://amzn.to/32RGi0W (Note, these are the color options you saw in my video, but you can search for other colors!) One other ukulele option I didn't cover in the video is slightly more expensive $56, but sounds a little bit better. It's truly amazing how good it sounds for the price. Since it's a more plain color, though, if that might make your child less interested I'd suggest going with the Makala Dolphin above. Kala KA-15 Soprano ukulele: https://amzn.to/32TFHvQ GUITAR OPTIONS: The Yamaha guitar I'll link to here is available in two different kid's sizes (depending on age), but it's the same basic instrument. It's a "classical style" nylon string guitar, which is the best option for kids to start with. This instrument sounds awesome, is well made, and is the most playable guitar I've found in this price range. Playability is very important to avoid unnecessary frustration from using a poorly-made instrument. Kids who are under 8 years old should play the 1/2 size guitar. Yamaha CGS102A 1/2 size: https://amzn.to/3hUyJLs For kids between the ages of 8 and approximately 11, a 3/4 size guitar is usually the best fit. Yamaha CGS103A 3/4 size: https://amzn.to/2ZVyCZF LOOG GUITARS: These come in several sizes. The website (linked below) is good about helping you navigate by age and pick the best size instrument. Everything they make is top-notch! Note, Loog now makes more "electric" options. This is what you want if your child likes the rock n' roll sound. $$$ LOOG DISCOUNT CODE! $$$ Loog gave me a code to share only with my YouTube subscribers and students. Use this link to visit the Loog website: http://www.loogguitars.com/benbrillcr... At checkout, enter the code BENBRILLCREATIVE10 to save 10% on most items in the Loog store. *Note, it may not work when Loog is having a big sale, but it is worth a try! BOOKS I MENTIONED: Note, if you get either of these books I mentioned, be sure to get the "Method AND Songbook option" (like in the links). Although having an experienced teacher is a big plus, these books are set up well enough that even a non-musical parent can get a kid started playing.
