A dramatic and controversial incident unfolded on Saturday night when part of a structure at St. Balikudembe Market was mysteriously demolished under the cover of darkness. The structure, located along the boundary of the Nakivubo Channel on Sebana Road, was reportedly brought down without any known demolition permit or authorization from the Kampala Capital City Authority. According to KCCA, the demolition activities were eventually halted, and police arrested the operators of the two machines that had been carrying out the work as investigations began. Authorities claim the demolition was conducted by “unidentified individuals.” But many observers find that explanation difficult to accept. How can heavily equipped machines enter one of Kampala’s busiest commercial areas and demolish structures overnight without anyone knowing who authorized the operation? The idea that unknown actors would risk such a bold and illegal move strains credibility. The controversy has inevitably drawn attention to businessman Ham Kiggundu, whose name has often surfaced in disputes involving the market and surrounding land. Critics argue that the incident reflects a troubling pattern in which wealth, influence, and political proximity appear to override procedure and due process. For some, the episode is seen as yet another example of the “might makes right” style of politics often associated with President Yoweri Museveni—a system where power and connections can seemingly bend the rules while ordinary citizens are left to deal with the consequences. What happened at Owino Market that night therefore raises bigger questions: Who really ordered the demolition, and why was it carried out in secrecy? Until those questions are answered, the shadows surrounding this midnight operation will only deepen public suspicion.
