The YouTuber on a Mission to Trash My Book, Chapter One: Traffic Jams on Mount Everest in 1996

In August 2024, I began to receive comments in my Instagram feed warning me that a YouTuber named Michael Tracy had been aggressively maligning my book, Into Thin Air, impugning my credibility, and spreading misinformation about the 1996 Everest disaster. In April 2024, Tracy posted the first of many videos claiming to have identified numerous errors in my book, most of which he claims are deliberate lies intended to promote a false narrative. Almost all of Tracy’s allegations are demonstrably untrue. This is the first of what will be at least 8 videos refuting Tracy’s most egregious false allegations. I intend to the post a new video every day or so going forward. I’ll begin by debunking Tracy's false claim that there were no significant delays on the Nepal side of Everest on May 10, 1996. Concurrently, I will also refute his related claim that any delays that did occur had little or nothing to do with the failure to fix ropes in advance on sections of the climbing route where such ropes were typically installed to safeguard clients. IMPORTANT UPDATE: Researching, writing, and creating videos for these chapters has been a tiresome, exceedingly unpleasant task. It has consumed months of my life, without any guarantee the outcome would be more helpful than hurtful. But as a direct result of my Medium posts and YouTube videos, on February 11, 2025, Michael Tracy announced on his YouTube channel that he has removed what is probably his most deceitful and defamatory video—the one blaming me for the death of Yasuko Namba, which I debunk in Chapter Three of my commentary. Tracy removed his video reluctantly, after yielding to intense criticism from his own followers. And he did so without apology, or admitting his video was dishonest, or indicating he would correct the many false and misleading statements he made in this video. But he took the video down.
