I learned several things this week, everybody. Mostly things about XTC, which I’ve done my best to impart here. Perhaps my most important lesson this week was that if you bite your tongue, don’t chase it with root beer. You’ll end up not being able to talk properly for three days. It is my sincerest hope that you learn from my foolish example. But guess what? This Classic Album Week on Vinyl Friday, we’re going to be talking about one of my all-time-favourite albums: XTC’s 1986 masterpiece, Skylarking. In addition to our usual musical deep dive, this episode will be about making space for eccentricity within the pop landscape and about the creative struggle between artist and producer. It’s also going to be a sort of personal episode about mental health. I hope some of it resonates for anyone who might need to hear it.
