Becoming a nationally known character by the late 1920s, all of America would know the name ""Fats" Waller" as a prominent swing artist & stage act. Before taking radio by storm however, Waller toured across the states extensively to perform live gigs at demand, one location of which would become his notable favorite. Before it's 1980 demolition, the northwest corner of Randolph and Clark Street was home to Chicago's famed Sherman House Hotel (Otherwise known as "Hotel Sherman.") Standing 17 stories high with a 23 story annex, Hotel Sherman served as one of the finest hotels in the Windy City for decades, featuring a number of venues while housing various politicians & entertainers. Known for his "greater than life" personality, Waller of course had found himself there as soon as he could help it! As detailed years later by his son, Maurice Waller, Hotel Sherman was a favorite of his father not only for it's elegance, but the "royal" treatment he received there. Despite his growing popularity, Waller & his band were often denied temporary housing in both the Southern & Northern U.S., as a result of racial prejudice. Even for the times they were accepted, it was common to be denied room & dining services, as further detailed by Maurice. Hotel Sherman proved to be an escape from the harsh reality Waller & his band faced elsewhere, with a number of repeat visits throughout the later half of their time together. (Eventually becoming his second "headquarters" outside of New York's Yacht Club.) One particular stay in December of 1940 featured "Fats" Waller & his Rhythm going live on air through the National Broadcasting Company, capturing the scene in two 25 minute broadcasts on separate days. The first day can be heard from this very video, offering one of few rare recordings of the Waller's group in front of a live audience. Joining forces with the band included relatively-known singer & dancer, Kathryn "Kay" Perry as a vocalist for a few numbers, additionally marking one of very few recordings to capture her voice. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Timestamps: NBC Remote Radio Broadcast, December, 1940 00:00 - Pantin' in the Panther Room (Opening) 00:53 - Whatcha Know, Joe? 04:24 - I Give You My Word [w/ "Kay" Perry] 07:35 - Lila Low 10:16 - Frenesi 13:20 - So You're the One [w/ "Kay" Perry] 16:26 - Dark Eyes 19:53 - Perfida 21:54 - When You & I Were Young, Maggie ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Thomas "Fats" Waller performing live with his "Rhythm" (Cedric Wallace, Wilmore "Slick" Jones, Albert "Al" Casey, Gene Cedric, and John Hamilton) and Kathryn "Kay" Perry from the Sherman House Hotel (Panther Room) of Chicago, Illinois.
