In February Nazareth University hosted the Conference Tune-Up track and field meet. Fredonia junior Jacob Winn, a sprinter, was going through his normal warm ups when he collapsed. His heart stopped. Nazareth assistant coach Zach Ferrara and Geneseo assistant Christian Johnson, a cardiac nurse, started CPR almost immediately. The crash kit with an AED was quickly brought over. The athletic trainer for the meet, Mike Pilato, started the AED unit. Soon paramedics arrived and rushed Jacob to Strong Memorial Hospital. He spent 38 days at Strong. Despite many tests there was no answers to why his heart stopped. A pacemaker was implanted and he returned home to Niagara Falls. He took the semester off. On most days, athletic trainers work with injuries to ankles and elbows. But they’re also prepared for events like the one at the GTC. Nazareth has six fulltime athletic trainers and they use others, like Mike Pilato, as needed. Team coaches also receive yearly life-saving training. That training likely saved Jacob Winn’s life.
