Listen to our experts Brent Warner, M.D. and Jack Skendzel, M.D. discuss hip arthroscopy, a minimally invasive surgery offered at Summit Orthopedics. For more information or to find an expert, visit us at summitortho.com. Video Transcription Hip arthroscopy is a minimally invasive type of hip surgery in which a small camera, about the diameter of a pencil, is placed down inside of the hip joint, through tiny incisions, that lets us see the entirety of the inside of the hip. And then we have other specialized small instruments that allow us to do surgical procedures inside of the joint. The things that we're most commonly treating with hip arthroscopy is hip impingement and hip labral tears. With the technology we have today and with our specialized training, the hip can be accessed in a minimally invasive way, arthroscopically through three poke holes on the side of the hip. When these types of procedures were first being developed in Europe, they were performed through a much larger incision. But now with the advantage of the arthroscope, we get a great detailed, up-close picture of the hip, of the labrum, of the cartilage, of all the structures. And so, I'm able to safely and efficiently address all of the pathology, the extra bone, any loose pieces, all in an outpatient setting with just small poke holes on the side of the hip.
