Joan Kathleen Harding Eardley experienced tragedy early in her life with the suicide of her father, and ultimately her life ended tragically with the misdiagnosis of her cancer by a homeopathic doctor, but her love for art and the freedom in her painting style mirrored her love for humanity, and the freedom in her own life. Her childhood was one in which she keenly felt a sense of loss, and the loss of her life at the age of forty-two could probably have been prevented. She painted the street children of impoverished areas of Glasgow with a sensitivity that came from empathy; she found freedom painting the rugged, sea-battered coastline of Aberdeenshire, and she found love in her relationships in a time of intolerance.
