Vitamin B2, commonly known as riboflavin, is a nutrient that is necessary for energy and cell development. It is found naturally in foods, may be added to meals, and is available as a supplement. Bacteria in the stomach may manufacture riboflavin in modest amounts, but not enough to fulfill nutritional requirements. Riboflavin is an essential component of coenzymes that are involved in cell development, energy generation, and the digestion of lipids, hormones, and medications. The RDA for males and females over the age of 19 is 1.3 mg and 1.1 mg daily, respectively. The dose increases to 1.4 mg and 1.6 mg daily during pregnancy and breastfeeding, respectively. Riboflavin does not have a Tolerable Upper Intake Level (UL) since a hazardous level has not been reported from food sources or from longer-term intakes of high-dose supplements. Riboflavin is mostly found in meat and fortified meals, although it is also present in certain nuts and green vegetables. Dairy milk, yogurt, cheese, eggs, lean beef and pork, organ meats (beef liver), chicken breast, salmon, fortified cereal and bread, almonds, and spinach are also good sources of riboflavin. Riboflavin insufficiency is quite uncommon in the United States. Thyroid problems might increase the likelihood of a deficit. A riboflavin shortage is most commonly associated with other dietary deficiencies, such as malnutrition. In extreme cases, symptoms may include cracked lips, a painful throat, mouth and throat swelling, a swollen tongue (glossitis), hair loss, a skin rash, anemia, itchy red eyes, or cataracts. Vegans and vegetarians are at a higher risk of deficiency due to a decreased diet or full absence of dairy and animal products, while pregnant women are at a higher risk due to increased nutritional demands with a developing fetus.
