Ravindra Rathee, author of the book “True to their Salt”, a HarperCollins India publication, delves into the contributions made by the Indian soldiers of the British Indian Army in both the expansion and downfall of the British Empire. With detailed research and use of primary sources, the book tells the story of the British Raj from the perspective of Indian soldiers, an aspect that has largely been ignored in popular literature, especially on colonial history. Rathee argues that the Indian army was the main fulcrum through which Britain ensured its empire in India and not studying its role and that of the Indian soldiers who served in it, provides an incomplete understanding of empire.
