Professional emailing etiquette can have so many specifics that it's hard to keep track. This video will review how to use the TO, CC, and BCC functions correctly when emailing. Here's one of the first decisions we must make when writing emails to multiple readers at once: Who will we list in the "To" spot, and who goes in the "CC" spot? Are these two the same or different? What message do we send someone when we put them in the "To" or "CC" position when emailing Business writers and professional writers need to know the difference between sending emails to different recipients—those in the "To" area vs those in the "CC" area. We also must be careful how (or whether) we use the BCC option when writing emails. Use "To" for readers who have to DO something with the information. Readers listed under "To" must have to ACT. They need to use what you wrote in your email. Use "CC" for readers who (at this time) only need to KNOW about the information, but do NOT need to do something or act. Make sure you put readers in the right place so they don't get confused about whether they need to ACT or KNOW once they've read your email. We rarely use the "BCC" in business emailing. Many people feel like using a BCC is less honest because not all readers will know who's been BCCed. However, it's good to use "BCC" for anyone who needs to keep a record of what's been sent. Usually, this will be YOU, the writer! In other cases, we might use "BCC" when emailing lists of people but not wanting them to see each other's emails—for privacy.
