It is also fueled by Yemen’s substantial but underexploited oil reserves and its strategic control over key trade routes leading to the Suez Canal. Synopsis: Sana’a, the capital of Yemen, is one of the world’s most inaccessible places and one of the highest capitals, sitting at 2,300 meters (7,500 feet) above sea level. For the past six years, Ansar Allah—a political and military movement formed by powerful northern families—has maintained control. However, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates are determined to reinstall the ousted Yemeni president. They view the Houthi rebels, who follow the Zaydi branch of Islam, as heretics and a threat to Wahhabism. Armed with Western-supplied weapons, they have waged a relentless bombing campaign in the north, turning the conflict into a devastating war. Over 230,000 Yemenis have already died, while a strict and meticulously enforced embargo is starving the population. According to UN agencies, Yemen faces one of the world’s worst famines, with 400,000 children reportedly at risk of death. New diseases have emerged since the war began, alongside a sharp rise in babies born with abnormalities.
