This video deals with how to hone in on setting a neck right on the center line and how to get the correct plane in relation to the upper bout- Everything I talk about in this video applies to both acoustic steel string guitar and ukulele. I deal with the various directions a neck has to be manipulated (by taking material away form the heel cheeks) so as to move the neck on the: X - i.e: Left and right until the center of the neck is in line with the center line of the top. and Y - i.e: getting the top of the neck and the upper bout on the same plane- so when you place a straight edge on the neck there is no gaps from the nut to the soundhole,... all while keeping the neck centered! I break down the heel into 6 areas (aka- a sextant) parts, or areas (3 each side). 1- Top half (closest to the fingerboard) 2- Bottom half (closest to the heel cap) 3- Entire face of heel cheek. By thinking in and focusing on just these 3 areas, you can aim the neck in the direction it needs to go (X and Y) by removing wood from one of these at a time. (sounds easy right!) Along the way i deal with other issues which I included instead of editing them out as its these parts which can be the best- EG 1- I realise my neck isn't as flat as it could be so I show how to plane, scrape and sand it flat. 2- I also show a tips on fitting a mortise/tenon that is slightly out of true of the center line, by either shimming it to move it over slightly to one side, or removing material from the lower and upper sides of the tenor to correct a slight twist which can happen if the tenon is incorrectly shaped.- as I do all this by hand, it usually happens. I also briefly show the method I use to insert a brass insert for the bolt- I have a dedicated video for that entire process for more info.- the link is shown at the end of this video. Enjoy.
