María Hinojosa Montenegro, soprano Accademia Barocca de I Virtuosi Italiani Conducted by Corrado Rovaris A manuscript of Salustia preserved at Montecassino Abbey appears to represent the opera’s original version, though it was likely never performed. In this score, all roles are written in soprano clef except for Claudio, whose part is written in tenor clef. The most significant variation concerns Claudio: his original tenor aria “Benché sia forte il core” is replaced in the manuscript by the soprano aria “Se tiranna, se tiranna.” This change likely relates to events shortly before the planned premiere in winter 1731–1732. The singer Nicolini died suddenly on January 1, 1732, making it impossible to maintain the original vocal distribution or rewrite the roles entirely. As a result, the young castrato Gioacchino Conti (“il Giziello”) was hired. Since he was unsuitable for the role of Marziano, the roles were reassigned: Giziello took the role of Claudio, and the tenor Tolve took Marziano. Consequently, Claudio’s role shifted from tenor to soprano (castrato), explaining the substitution of Claudio’s original tenor aria with a soprano aria. Thus, the Montecassino score likely reflects the opera’s original version, in which Claudio was written for tenor, even though the opera was ultimately redistributed with Claudio performed by a soprano (castrato).
