Radu Vodă Monastery is a monastery in Romania located in Bucharest, classified as a historical monument, with the code B-II-a-A-A-19498. On the place where the Radu Voda Monastery rises today, important archaeological remains dating from the Paleolithic period have been discovered. In geto-Dacian times, the settlement on the hill near today's Union Square had strong fortifications, constituting a strategic point of first rank. The first church on the Radu Voda hill is attributed to the ruler Mihnea the Bad (1508-1509), the second being founded by the ruler Alexander II Mircea (1568-1577), great-grandson of Vlad the Impaler. His son, Mihnea Turcitul, will endow the monastery with estates, villages and precious odour – increasing its prestige in Wallachia. During his reign, the monastery was founded the first library in Bucharest. In 1595, radu voda monastery church was temporarily used as a mosque by the troops of Sinan Pasha, and then burned in their withdrawal from the army of Michael the Brave. Radu Vodă Mihnea rebuilt the monastery from the ground up, in 1625, worshiping it to the Ivirion Monastery in Athos. Patriarch Macarie of Antioch and Paul of Aleppo, visiting the Radu Voda Monastery in 1653-1657, remain deeply impressed by its architecture. The earthquakes of 1829 and 1838 will cause great damage to the Radu Voda Monastery, requiring extensive restoration works. In 1875, Titu Maiorescu, at that time minister of cults, decided to demolish a significant part of the monastery – as well as other monastic precincts and inns in Bucharest – considered unsanitary buildings. The church, the bell tower and some of the cells will still remain undemolished. If in the period 1839-1847 in Radu Voda will function the Seminary of the Metropolia, and later, for a short period, the French High School, at the beginning of the communist period, will function here a school of party cadres. The buildings of the Theological Seminary, located south of the church, date back to 1893, being built under the care of Ion Scorțeanu and his sister Maria Șchiopescu, as boarding school of the seminary. In 1960 the monastery is disbanded. Subsequently, Patriarch Justinian will request the restoration of the church from Radu Voda between 1969 and 1974, the sanctuary being re-consecrated in 1979. The painting of the church belongs to Archimandrite Sofian Boghiu, in the narthex being preserved, however, a significant part of Gheorghe Tattarescu's painting. The monastery was reactivated in 1998 by Patriarch Teoctist. In the church of the Radu Voda Monastery there is the tomb of Patriarch Justinian Marina.
