St. Maria Goretti is one of the most beloved virgin martyrs in the Catholic Church. Martyred at the age of twelve, she forgave her killer, Alessandro Serenelli. In this first of a series of videos retracing the life of St. Maria Goretti, Bret Thoman explores the birthplace of the young saint -- Corinaldo. Corinaldo is an idyllic hill town near the Adriatic Sea in the central Italian region of the Marches. Here, Maria Goretti was born on October 16, 1890 to Luigi and Assunta Goretti, who were sharecroppers. Though poor materially, they raised their children with strong Christian values. Due to poverty and other conditions, both families were forced to migrate to the Roman countryside. There, unimaginable tragedies would befall the Goretti family. In this video, visit the town itself, the church of San Francesco where Maria was baptized, the birth house where she was born and grew up, and the Shrine of the Incancellata dedicated to the Virgin Mary.
