(6 May 1994) South Africa's first multi-racial election was declared free and fair by the Independent Electoral Commission on Friday (6/5). The Commission also announced that the African National Congress (ANC) won with 62.65 percent of the vote. The white-led National Party of outgoing President F.W. de Klerk finished second with 20.39 percent of the vote. Third went to the ANC's main black rival, the Zulu nationalist Inkatha Freedom Party with 10.54 percent. ANC leader, Nelson Mandela, now becomes South Africa's first black president.
