The second ship of the Project 17A or Nilgiri class Stealth Frigate and G R S E or Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Ltd built first ‘INS Himgiri‘ successfully launched today at Kolkata. The ship was launched under the presence of Chief of Defence Staff Bipin Rawat. INS Himgiri was laid down on 10 November 2018 and within 25 months GRSE launched the frigates for sea trials. She was expected to induct into the service of Indian Navy by 2023. Project 17A or the Nilgiri class frigates is the follow on of the Project 17 Shivalik class frigates for Indian Navy. Under this project a total 7 stealth frigates will be built by two Shipyards of India. The contract with two Shipyards was signed in 2015 at Rs 45,000 crore by government of India. Mazagon Dock Limited will construct four frigates, out of which one frigates already launched by M D L in 28 September 2019. The remaining three frigates will be build by GRSE, out of 3, GRSE launched INS Himgiri today. The name of the upcoming ships are Taragiri, Udyagiri, Dunagiri, Vindhyagiri and Mahendragiri. The Nilgiri-class frigates have a Displacement of 6,670 tonnes. All the remaining 5 ships will be launched by the end of 2023 and will be induct into the service of Indian Navy by 2025.
