With twelve feature films and over six billion dollars grossed at the box office, Christopher Nolan’s almost thirty-year-long career as a writer, director, and producer could fairly be categorised among the most successful in history. His latest film, Oppenheimer, received universal critical acclaim and as many as seven Academy Awards, in a landmark sweep many believed to be long overdue for the British-American filmmaker. While I wouldn’t personally consider him to be one of my favourite writer/directors, it would be difficult to overstate the unique position Nolan has crafted for himself among his contemporaries - belonging to a prestigious group of creatives whose commercial and critical achievements are so undeniable that they’re able to secure funding for almost any idea they could have - and Christopher Nolan’s ideas are seldom small in scope. Luckily, at least for the wallets of studio executives, his films also reliably appeal to a huge mainstream audience.
