Children in West Bengal are getting killed and injured by home-made bombs | BBC News India

BBC Eye Investigations has found evidence that at least 565 children in the Indian state of West Bengal have been injured, maimed, blinded, or killed by home-made bombs over the last three decades. The so-called ‘crude bombs’ are hand-thrown devices, packed with shrapnel and explosives, that are used by political activists during election campaigns to intimidate opponents, to create havoc at opposition rallies, or to assert control over a neighbourhood. They are often stashed in out-of-the-way places where children find them and mistake them for balls. The devices can explode when they are picked up or thrown. There are no publicly available data on the number of children injured by crude bombs. But BBC Eye looked through every edition of two respected West Bengal newspapers from 1996 to 2024 and found reports of at least 565 children who have been injured or killed by these devices over that period.
