Some protesters wore inflatable animal costumes, including frogs, a giraffe, and an elephant, turning the protest into a playful yet pointed display of resistance. The demonstrators faced off with federal agents and at least one person was arrested, after warnings from authorities that vehicular traffic to the ICE facility should not be blocked. Trump has promised to send the National Guard to Portland, Oregon, to protect federal officers and property from demonstrators. But the Democratic governor of Oregon has accused Trump of deliberately mischaracterising small, mostly peaceful protests as violent and dangerous to justify National Guard deployments.
