This film shows construction of the Space Needle for the 1962 Seattle World’s Fair aka the Century 21 Exposition. The film shows the complicated process of fabrication, which took roughly 400 days. The AISC seal (:12), building frames, dirt and a Y-shaped excavation (:34) open the film. This would inevitably become the framework for the space needle in a year (:40). The project was contracted to the steel division of PACCAR. Aerial shots of the manufacturing plant follow (:36). Within the plant, sparks shoot out from 30 ft. steel anchor bolts (:45). Bottom plates are carted over the planted floor (:59). Preparations are conducted prior to pouring concrete into the frames (1:21). Concrete moves down the chutes (1:34). PACCAR construction workers (1:59) fabricate store sections. Precision shop work follows (2:06). Sections are welded together in the field (2:19). One of the architects is noted for designing steel structures for rocket launching pads at Cape Canaveral. Seattle contractor; Howard S. Wright (2:37) was general contractor. Workers slip through steel frames with acrobatic ease (2:41). Welders work on opposing sides during core section welding (3:00). PACCAR designed a specific dairy crane to lift the red tower (3:15). The camera view runs up the core of the space needle (3:25). A thrust ring (3:33) provides stability for the mast. A 100 ton crawler crane lifts the steel (3:45). The mast is set (4:08) and the boon is raised. The outer section (4:12) is raised. Construction workers test the rotation of the derrick (4:54). Communication among the workers is operated through a throat microphone (4:58). Welders stand around the core section (5:14). The raising crew set stairs within the core (5:19). The ground crane raises the core sections (5:36). The derrick is raised (6:10) in a 25 minute process conducted 7 times daily. Leg bases are moved into place (6:27). Moveable scaffolds (6:57) and landing platforms are pictured (7:04). Workers are carted up by skip (7:09). Construction of the space needles tripod legs follow (7:24). A shot of the yard shows it full of main leg sections (8:03). Sections are rotated (8:13) and the first section is raised (9:12). Fabricated steel is transported from the shop to the field (9:54). Workers bolt joints (10:43) swinging high on steel frames. Curved beams are assembled in the shop (11:59). Banana shaped sections are lifted (12:23). The ring garter is assembled for the space needle workshop (14:09). The crane pulls up sections (14:34). Out rigors are assembled for revolving restaurant floor (15:44). Six sections (15:48) are lifted in an eccentric lift (15:56).  The steel man salutes the camera (16:22). Construction continues into the evening (16:41). The top plate is fashioned on (17:17) for the final welding. Safety is discussed (18:36). X-ray work is completed at night (18:45). The construction elevator on the job (18:49) provides preview of space needle ride (18:52). Steel members are raised by crane, swinging through air (19:14). The turn table for restaurants revolving floor appears (19:54). The view runs down (20:49) as workers stand 500 ft. above streets of Seattle. Helicopter views of the completed ring (21:05) follow. The elevator is lifted to top (22:32). The American flag waves as it is passes from worker to worker in a highly patriotic moment (22:38). A strom rolls in as the job nears completion (24:06). On December 18, the company employees and iron workers (24:42) are awarded for efforts. Final derricks are lowered to the ground (24:27). The construction crew is awarded a safety award (24:44). The Fair opens (25:00). An elevator carts tourists up (25:17). Stunning shot over the blue follows (25:30); tourists peer out at the observation deck. A sweeping view of Cascade Mountains (25:34) closes the film.  Motion picture films don't last forever; many have already been lost or destroyed. For almost two decades, we've worked to collect, scan and preserve the world as it was captured on 35mm, 16mm and 8mm movies -- including home movies, industrial films, and other non-fiction. If you have endangered films you'd like to have scanned, or wish to donate celluloid to Periscope Film so that we can share them with the world, we'd love to hear from you.
