11 Favorite NYC Buildings from a Local

11 Favorite NYC Buildings from a Local from the Empire State Building to the Chrysler Building and Flatiron Building to the newer Guggenheim and One World Trade Center. Learn what those towers in Central Park are called (San Remo) and some fun facts about each iconic NYC structure and building. This was filmed July 2019 and I finally edited it. Stay tuned till the end for all the many bloopers! Related videos: 1. Watch "The History and How to walk across the Brooklyn Bridge"    • NYC Travel Guide: How to Walk Across the B...   2. Watch my Flatiron District area guide:    • Flatiron District NYC Travel Guide: things...   If you’ve ever asked which building that is and wondered about the history or design of the most iconic NYC buildings than this video is for you! New York City has one of the most recognizable skylines and is the second city in the world with the most skyscrapers, second only to Hong Kong, so it is near impossible to know every tall building but here are the top ones you should know by name! 1. Empire State Building: The tallest skyscraper when it was completed in 1931, the Empire State Building is one of the most photographed buildings in the world. It has also played large roles in movies such as King Kong and Sleepless in Seattle. The building takes up a full city block and even has its own zip code, 10118. The tower light shows change to mark holidays and special occasions. www.esbnyc.com/explore/tower-lights 2. Chrysler Building: Before the Empire State Building this was the tallest building in the world in 1930 and it is easily distinguished by its lovely Art Deco crown details. The 71st floor’s public observatory closed in 1945 and is now privately owned. Walter P. Chrysler had a private apartment on the top floor and LIFE photographer Margaret Bourke-White had an apartment on the 61st floor. 3. World Trade Center: The shining new beacon of Downtown or the “Freedom Tower” in the area where the Twin Towers once stood is now the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere. The “One World Observatory” brings tourists through history in an elevator video to the top with 360 views over the city. 4. Flatiron Building: The intersection of Broadway and Fifth Avenue created the triangular plot that was known as the “flat iron” before the building was constructed. Built in 1902, it was one of the first steel-framed buildings in NYC and was originally considered an eye sore, before now being an iconic and beloved building 5. Grand Central Terminal: Grand Central Terminal, built in 1913, is a historic landmark building. VOICEOVER: From the opal faced Tiffany Glass clock in the center of the main concourse to the Vanderbilt acorns to the Whispering Gallery where visitors can whisper and be heard on the opposite corners, this place makes time travel seem possible! Eat and drink in style at the Oyster Bar with the grand vaulted ceilings or the swanky Campbell Apartment bar. The recently restored green ceiling of constellations was actually painted on backwards, which some say was done purposely to show God’s view of the stars. Almost one million people pass through its doors annually, second only to Times Square as the most popular NYC attraction. Whisper to friends across the Whispering Gallery, admire the backwards constellations from “God’s point of view,” enjoy one of the largest selections of Oysters at the Oyster Bar and sip a cocktail in the Campbell Apartment. 6. 30 Rockefeller Center: The namesake of the show 30 rock is home of the “Top of the Rock” observation deck, NBC’s studios and the Rainbow Room. The famous 1932 photograph “Lunch Atop a Skyscraper” was taken during construction of the building’s 69th floor. 7. Guggenheim: Frank Lloyd Wright designed the spiral ramped building with domed skylight that allowed visitors an uninterrupted viewing experience and perspective of multiple exhibits on different floors at the same time. This Nautilus shell shaped building houses exhibits of Impressionist to Contemporary art. 8. St. Patrick’s Cathedral: This renovated neo-gothic Roman Catholic Cathedral is a prominent landmark church located on Fifth Avenue between 50th Street and 51st Street. 9. The San Remo: Not many people know the name of the San Remo building that is in almost all Central Park photographs. The iconic twin-towered structure is a 27-floor apartment building. 10. NY Public Library: The main branch of the Public Library was dedicated in 1911 with the iconic two Tennessee lions “Patience and Fortitude” flanking the main entrance. Two must-see rooms in the library are the beautiful Rose Main Reading Room and the Map Division. 11. Woolworth Building: The Woolworth Building was the tallest building in the world when it was completed in 1913. Millionaire Frank W. Woolworth commissioned Cass Gilbert to construct the Beaux-Arts white terracotta building with ornate Gothic details.
