Aviation White Paper brings ‘positive’ changes but does not address airline competition

Flight Centre Chief Executive Graham Turner discusses the Aviation White Paper handed down by the government in hopes of shaking up the domestic aviation industry amid soaring flight costs and the collapse of domestic airlines Rex and Bonza. The white paper aims to introduce an aviation industry ombudsperson to enforce customer rights and allow Australians to receive cash refunds for cancelled or unreasonably delayed flights. “Generally, the travel industry thinks most of it [Aviation White Paper] quite positive,” Mr Turner said. “We like the idea of airlines being required to repay refunds, perhaps more quickly and in cash. “There are many other things that need to happen; we’d like to see more competition, particularly domestically."
